Owen Sound downs Battalion 3-1
NORTH BAY, Ont. — Rookie Aidan Dudas scored what proved to be the winning goal at 14:14 of the first period as the Owen Sound Attack skated to a 3-1 victory over the North Bay Battalion in an Ontario Hockey League preseason game Saturday.
Zachary Roberts and Petrus Palmu also scored for Owen Sound, which received two assists from Thomas Schemitsch in pushing its won-lost-extended record in exhibition play to 4-0-0.
Starting goaltender Bradley Van Schubert stopped all 15 shots he faced before being relieved at 10:34 of the second period by Riley Daniels, who gave up one goal on 22 shots.
Steve Harland scored a late power-play goal for the Battalion, 1-2-0 in the preseason, while goaltender Mat Woroniuk made 25 saves.
Roberts opened the scoring at 11:40 of the first period when he found himself alone in front of the net to corral a loose puck and flick it behind Woroniuk.
Dudas scored on a deep two-on-one rush against Jake Ramalho, taking a cross-crease pass from Nick Pryce and converting from the left side as Woroniuk had no chance on the play.
Palmu struck for his team-leading fourth goal of the preseason at 5:03 of the middle period before the Troops took advantage of a head-checking major and game misconduct to Ethan Szypula for a hit on Cam Dineen at 13:17 of the third frame. Harland, at the left side of the crease, corraled a pass from Maurizio Colella and put the puck over the sprawling Daniels at 16:35.
North Bay continued to apply pressure through the rest of the man advantage but couldn’t pull closer either then or in the waning seconds with Woroniuk on the bench for a sixth skater.
A fracas at 16:06 of the first period saw four players receive penalties, including three of the visitors. Jonah Gadjovich was assessed crosschecking and roughing minors, while Jacob Friend drew a roughing call and misconduct and Roberts a misconduct.
The Battalion’s Riley Bruce received a minor for checking from behind and a misconduct. Teammates Colella, Harland and Brett Hargrave were put in the box only to be liberated without penalties.
The Battalion completes its exhibition schedule with a visit to Owen Sound at 2 p.m. Sunday.
