Bob Marshall joins Battalion coaching staff

BRAMPTON, Ont. – The Brampton Battalion announced today the appointment of Bob Marshall as the Ontario Hockey League team’s new assistant coach.

r
A native of North York, Ont., Marshall, a sixth-round draft choice of the NHL’s Calgary Flames in 1991, recently concluded an eight-year career in the minor professional ranks.
r

r
Marshall, 30, replaces former North Bay Centennials assistant coach Mark French, who joined the Battalion in May but recently accepted the head coaching job at Wilfrid Laurier University.
r

r
It’s great for Mark to get the opportunity to be the head coach at Wilfrid Laurier, and we wish him the best in his coaching endeavours,” said Stan Butler, Battalion director of hockey operations and head coach.
r

r
Marshall played defence for Butler in the late 1980s as a member of the Wexford Raiders of the Metro Junior B League. He will work with another Wexford alumnus, goaltending coach Luigi Villa, on the Battalion staff.
r

r
Marshall went on to play at Miami (Ohio) University from 1990-94. He earned third-team All American honours in his junior season and was named to the All-CCHA Second Team in his junior and senior campaigns. After his college career, Marshall played 87 games for the Saint John Flames of the American Hockey League before being traded to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks organization, where he played almost two full seasons with the Baltimore Bandits of the AHL. Marshall also had stints in the Central Hockey League and United Hockey League and spent two seasons playing in Germany.
r

r
It’s great to have a former professional defenceman on our staff, and that should help a lot of our younger players,” Butler said. It’s also great to have a guy who has played for me, and that means two of the three guys on our coaching staff are former players of mine.”
r

r
Marshall will report for duty at the Bunker on Aug. 15. He joins a coaching staff that includes Butler and assistants Villa and Gord Smith.
