NORTH BAY, Ont. — The third day of the North Bay Battalion’s training camp Wednesday left the Ontario Hockey League club’s coaching staff with plenty to ponder before the final action Thursday.
“It’s been a very good camp,” Stan Butler, director of hockey operations and head coach, said of the battle for roster spots. “There’s certainly a lot of depth out there.”
A total of 43 players competed in the second intrasquad game, one fewer than in the opener Tuesday. Centre Jared Weber, injured during fitness testing Monday, remained sidelined for Team White, while right winger Justin Brazeau of Team Green was rested during the three 25-minute periods, leaving each squad with 12 forwards.
The Green and White benches were run by Scott Wray and Adam Dennis, Battalion assistant coaches, respectively. Butler observed the Memorial Gardens action with owner Scott Abbott from his suite.
A third and final intrasquad game, consisting of three 20-minute periods and open to the public at no charge, is scheduled at 9 a.m. Thursday before camp breaks.
The Battalion then heads to the inaugural OHL Pre-Season Showcase at Buffalo. The team will play three games in as many days starting Friday.
Adam McMaster’s second goal of the game, at 2:54 of the third period, proved the winner as Team Green downed Team White 5-4. Green clinched the camp title after a 5-3 win Tuesday.
