NORTH BAY, Ont. – The North Bay Battalion ended its four-day training camp Thursday with 27 players on the roster, including six who have yet to play an Ontario Hockey League game.
The preseason roster comprises 16 forwards, nine defencemen and two goaltenders, in veterans Mat Woroniuk and Julian Sime.
The forwards are centres Brett McKenzie, Adam McMaster, Kyle Potts, Luke Burghardt, Rhys Forhan and Kurtis Evans, left wingers Daniil Vertiy, Jacob Ball, Daniel Walker, Brad Chenier and Luke Moncada and right wingers Justin Brazeau, Andy Baker, Alex Robert, Brandon Coe and Patrick Brown.
The OHL newcomers among the forwards are Coe, the Battalion’s first-round choice, third overall, in the OHL Priority Selection in April, Evans and Brown. Burghardt and Moncada were acquired from the Guelph Storm in a trade June 27.
The defencemen include six veterans in Riley Bruce, Jesse Saban, Adam Thilander, Cam Dineen, Brady Lyle and Eric Allair. Newcomers are Simon Rose, Travis Mailhot and Payton Vescio.
Brown, Mailhot and Vescio have signed standard player’s agreements including education packages with the club.
Twenty-four players were to travel to Niagara Falls, Ont., Thursday to prepare for three games in as many days starting Friday in the inaugural OHL Pre-Season Showcase at the HarborCenter in Buffalo. Thilander, who’s with the Swedish national junior team, is expected to arrive in North Bay on Sunday, while Bruce and Ball still are recovering from injuries suffered last season.
The Battalion faces the Kitchener Rangers at 4 p.m. Friday in the first of a total of six exhibition games. North Bay plays the Windsor Spitfires at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and the Flint Firebirds at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
The last of the intrasquad games at the camp, which opened with 45 players on the ice, was played Thursday in three 20-minute periods rather than 25-minute frames as was the case previously.
Baker scored two second-period goals to pace Team White to a 5-2 victory over Team Green in the last camp game, averting a sweep after Green took 5-3 and 5-4 decisions.
