Inaugural Alumni Golf Classic

May 15, 2019

The North Bay Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League announced Wednesday that former players Jake Smith, Mike Amadio, Kyle Wood and Mathew Santos, all members of the team that reached the OHL Championship Series in 2013-14, are the first four to confirm their participation in the inaugural North Bay Battalion Alumni Golf Classic to be held at Osprey Links Golf Course in Callander on Friday, June 21.

Net proceeds from the event will be directed to North Stars Special Needs Hockey and Community Living North Bay.

“I’ve talked to several Battalion alumni, and we’re all looking forward to returning to North Bay and helping raise funds for the North Stars and Community Living,” said Smith, the winningest goaltender in franchise history. “The fans in North Bay were a big part of our success, and it’ll be fun catching up with some familiar faces at the tournament.”

Amadio, the first 50-goal scorer in Battalion history, has played 80 games with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League since graduating from the Troops after the 2015-16 campaign. He played four seasons with the Battalion in Brampton and North Bay, ranking fifth in franchise history with 92 goals and 134 assists for 226 points in 263 games.

Wood, named the Battalion’s top defenceman in 2015-16, is property of the NHL’s San Joe Sharks and served as an alternate captain last season with the American Hockey League’s San Jose Barracuda. He has registered 97 points in 185 games with the Barracuda and Tucson Roadrunners.

Santos, who starred with the Ryerson University Rams last season, tied Maxime St-Cyr of the University of Moncton as the top goal scorer in Canadian university men’s hockey, recording 23 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 26 games. In 251 games over four seasons with the Battalion, Santos scored 53 goals and earned 74 assists for 127 points.

The event is to feature Battalion alumni playing nine holes with each group entered in the tournament. Molson Coors has confirmed its support as beverage sponsor, and Bavarian Meats will present the dinner.
